Set along the shoreline of Big Rideau Lake in Ontario, this century-old family cottage carries generations of history. Originally built by our client’s grandfather, the home holds the quiet charm of traditional Canadian lake cottages - simple architecture, timeworn materials, and spaces shaped by decades of summer living.
Our design approach honours the heritage of the cottage while thoughtfully evolving it for modern family life. Rather than reinventing the home, the design focuses on preserving its character through timeless millwork, traditional cottage details, and a layout that supports relaxed summer hosting.
Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the palette draws from the colours of lake life - soft blues reflecting the water, warm butter yellows reminiscent of morning sunlight, and natural woods that echo the forested shoreline. The result is a home that feels calm, welcoming, and deeply connected to its setting.
This project is a careful balance of preservation and renewal - ensuring the cottage remains a beloved gathering place for generations to come.
